Most interviewers will allow you the chance to ask them a few questions This is a sign that the
interview is drawing to a close, and that you have one more chance to make an impression. It is
important that you prepare such questions for two reasons. First and most important, you need
information to help you decide if you would accept the job if offered. Second, asking relevant
questions indicates a higher level of interest and that you have done some seriously thinking
about the job and company. Listed below are some sample questions for you. Not all of them
are appropriate for every interview situation:

1. Why is this position open?
2. Why was this position created?
3. Why isn’t this position being filled from within the company/organization?
4. How often has this position been filled in the past five to ten years? (If the number is high,
you may want to ask what the reasons are for the turnover).
5. Why did the last person leave?
6. What is an example of some best work produced by people in this position?
7. What would you like done differently by the next person who fills this position?
8. What made the previous person(s) in this position successful/unsuccessful?
9. What is the organizational structure of the company?
10. What has the growth of this company/organization/department been in the past several
years?
11. Has there been any downsizing in the last few years? What does the future look like in this
regard?
12. Who will be my immediate supervisor and how does he or she fit into the organizational
structure?
13. What is the supervisor’s management style?
14. How many people work in the department?
15. With whom would I be interacting most frequently, what are his or her responsibilities, and
what would be the nature of our interaction?
16. Does the company maintain a promote-from-within policy?
17. What type of training is required and how long would it be?
18. What opportunities does your company offer for further training and education?
19. What are the travel requirements, if any?
20. What are the specific job responsibilities and accountabilities?
21. What do you feel are the greatest challenges of this position?
22. What are some of the objectives you would like accomplished in this position?
23. What are some major concerns that need to be addressed right away?
24. What projects do you anticipate that I would be involved with in the future as versus now?
25. What needs to be accomplished in this position in the next 6-12 months?
26. What are some of the longer-term objectives that you would like completed?
27. What would my first assignment be?
28. What is a typical day like?
29. What is the work environment like?
30. May I see the work area for this position?
31. Is there a written job description for the position? When was it last updated? May I have a
copy of it?
32. How do you (the supervisor) like to operate in terms of assignments and delegation of
responsibility and authority?
33. What kind of support does this position receive?
34. Can you tell me something about the people I would be working closely with?
35. How would my work be evaluated?
36. How regularly do performance evaluations occur?
37. What promotional opportunities are available if I do my job well?
38. To where have successful people in this position advanced?
39. What are the skills and attributes most needed to advance in the company?
40. What are some of the problems you feel a new employee would face in this position and do
you have any suggestions for dealing with them?
41. What significant changes do you foresee in the future for this position and perhaps for the
company?
42. Who will be the company’s major competitor over the next few years? How does the
interviewer feel the company stacks up against them?
43. What has been the growth pattern of the company over the last five years? Is it profitable?
How profitable? Is the company privately or publicly held?
44. What attracted you to this company? How long have you been here? What is it about the
company that keeps you here?
45. What are the company’s/department’s strengths and weaknesses?
46. Is there anything else that would be good to know?
47. Is there anything else you’d like to ask me?
48. How do my skills compare with those of the other candidates interviewed so far?
49. What particular things about my background, experience and style interest you?
50. Do you have any concerns about me? What could I do to lessen them?
51. What else can I do to get a job offer from your company/organization?
52. What advice would you give to me at this point?
53. What is the time frame for making a decision on this position?
54. What is the next step in your interview process?
55. When would it be best for me to contact you about your hiring decision / your second
interview selection decision?
